Why buy an Engagement Ring?

Engagement rings are a piece of jewelry that has a deeper significance beyond their beauty and appearance. An accessory that is everything great about relationships: love, loyalty, and a deep desire to spend the rest of your life with someone special.

But before you pop the big question, let us tell you first everything you need to know about buying an engagement ring, from setting a budget to choosing the right style, fit, and materials, and the importance of certification and appraisal.

How Much is an Engagement Ring?

Purchasing an engagement ring is an exciting and memorable experience. But before you go throwing your hard-earned cash around, it's important to set a budget and avoid turning this romantic gesture into a financial disaster.

To set a budget, follow these engagement ring budget tips:

Tip #1: Forget about the outdated "one or two-month salary" rule and choose a budget that suits your financial situation. Spend what feels comfortable to you and consider other wedding expenses or debts.

Tip #2: Conduct online research for budget-friendly engagement rings. Also try to understand what you and your partner want in an engagement ring. Take note of your partner's fashion style and seek their input.

Tip #3: Quality is more critical than size regarding diamonds. A smaller diamond with higher quality will sparkle brighter than a larger one with more imperfections. A customized ring can also be a unique and special option.

How Do I Choose a Diamond for an Engagement Ring?

Now, let's talk about diamonds, a traditional choice for engagement rings, and for good reasons.

Four factors determine a diamond's quality: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. The higher the rating in these factors, the more valuable the diamond.

First, the master of all Cs—cut. It's all about the angles and proportions of the diamond cut. Don't forget those finishing details. The best diamond cuts are graded as Excellent or Very Good.

As for color, we're talking about something other than rainbows here. In diamond pricing, colorless are the most scarce and hence, the priciest. In contrast, yellow diamonds are relatively abundant and have a lower price point.

Clarity is also key—imperfections are a big no-no. It's basically how flawless the diamond ring is. Every diamond has these tiny imperfections called inclusions and blemishes, like a beauty mark, but not as cute (since we're talking about the price value here). The fewer the blemishes, the more valuable the diamond quality is.

The carat weight in the 4Cs of diamond quality is simply how much a diamond weighs. You know what they say, the bigger, the better—and the more expensive! This means the heavier the diamond engagement ring you choose, the lighter your wallet will be.

Engagement Ring Styles

Engagement ring styles and designs determine how the ring looks on the finger and how it feels to wear it. If you're all about romance and whimsy, halo engagement rings might be your cup of tea. It has a piece of a diamond as the centerpiece, with smaller diamonds or gemstones adorning the sides to add extra beauty.

Want to add a touch of vintage glamor to your proposal? Opt for cushion-cut or marquise vintage engagement rings. And, of course, you can never go wrong with a classic and traditional ring featuring timeless cuts and designs like solitaire engagement rings.

Ring Size and Fit

To measure ring size, use a ring sizer tool or measure the finger's circumference with a piece of string or paper. Ensure you measure the exact finger where the ring will be worn since each finger can have a slightly different size.

Aside from ring sizing, also pay attention to the right ring fit. A too-loose ring can easily slip off the finger, while one that's too tight can cause discomfort and even restrict blood flow. A good fit allows the ring to slide easily over the knuckle but still fit snugly on the finger.

Timing is key, too. Fingers can swell or shrink throughout the day, so it's best to measure in the evening when they're at their largest size. Remember, getting the engagement ring size and fit right is essential for comfort, safety, and keeping the ring where it belongs!

Metals and Materials

There are different engagement ring metals and materials used for rings. The traditional choices are gold, silver, and platinum.

Gold is a popular choice due to its classic appearance, but it can be expensive and may require maintenance over time.

Platinum engagement rings are highly durable and hypoallergenic, but it can also be expensive and may show scratches over time.

Sterling silver is an attractive and affordable option, but it's softer than other metals and prone to scratches and dents.

Each metal or material demands different care; some may scuff or discolor over time. For instance, platinum and gold engagement rings necessitate polishing to eliminate scratches, while silver tarnishes and requires storage in anti-tarnish bags.

Alternative engagement ring materials like cobalt are hardy and scratch-resistant but may not have the same value as precious metals.

Certification and Appraisal

Why it's a smart move to get engagement rings certified and appraised? Basically, an engagement ring appraisal is a process of determining if your ring is genuine and high-quality.

A replacement value appraisal is essential for insurance purposes, a fair market value appraisal will give you an idea of its current selling price, and a liquidation appraisal determines its value in unexpected situations.

If your engagement ring has diamonds or gemstones, ensuring they have diamond certification from reputable organizations such as AGS and GIA certification is important. This certification provides information on the 4Cs of diamond engagement rings`.

Be Prepared Before Buying an Engagement Ring

While the meaning of the engagement ring has changed over the years, its importance has remained constant. In fact, it's still considered one of the essential elements of a proposal today.

That is why it is important to set a budget for diamond ring purchase, choose based on the 4Cs, select a suitable style and metal, and ensure the proper fit and certification to ensure you get the right one that will last a lifetime.
